You're going down Joe Public
Some good news today for the winner of the CONCACAF Champions League Canadian qualifying tournament, which started last night with a 1-0 Toronto win against Montreal.
Originally, it was assumed that Canada would be placed into Pot B of the qualifying round draw, which would have potentially put the Canadian champ up against a Mexican or MLS team. However, it’s been (reliably) leaked today that Canada will actually be in Pot A.
If, as expected, TFC wins the Canadian tournament, the Reds will go into its CL qualifier as the clear favourite. Even if Montreal or Vancoucer pull the upset, the USL sides will feel that they have a shot.
The confirmed teams in Pot B are:
San Francisco FC (Panama)
Hankook Verdes (Belize)
Deportivo Jalapa (Guatemala)
CD Luis Angel Firpo (El Salvador)
Nicaragua Representative
Puerto Rico Islanders (PR)
Joe Public FC (T&T)
Harbour View FC (Jamaica)
Harbour View is likely the best team on that list. In this past year’s CONCACAF Club Championship (an eight team single knock-out tournament that the CL is replacing) the Jamaican side managed to tie DC United at home, before falling badly in the return leg.
