CIS CORNER: ONE A LONELY NUMBER FOR GGs

The weekend so far for our teams of interest from The 613...

HOCKEY
  • Gee-Gees: Ottawa's shootout loss to York on Sunday stings, since that was their game in hand over Carleton, whom they're deadlocked with for the final playoff spot in the conference. They ended up with just a single point from a home weekend, largely thanks to York goalie Devin Ramasawmy, who stopped 50 shots on Sunday before blocking 5-of-6 in the shootout.

Kingston native Nick Vernelli scored twice for Ottawa in a losing cause.

Mark Heatley (brother of the Senators' Dany) factored into all three Toronto goals in the Varsity Blues' 3-1 win over the Gee-Gees on Saturday.
  • Gaels: Goalie Ryan Gibb stopped 40-of-41 shots to help Queen's pull off a huge 4-1 win over Laurier on Saturday. It sets Queen's up well, since its next four games are against Windsor and RMC. Toronto, one point back in the division with a game in hand, has a tough weekend coming up vs. Western and Waterloo.
  • Ravens: Former Gatineau Olympiques grinder Chad Loikets dressed for the first time this weekend and scored a goal in Saturday's 6-3 win over York that gave Carleton a three-point weekend. Meantime, here's the games left and point totals for the six teams slugging it out for four playoff spots (Trois-Rivieres and McGill will be seeded first and third).
    Queen's 9 / 20
    Concordia 11 / 19
    Toronto 10 / 19
    Ottawa 9 / 19
    Carleton 9 / 18
    RMC 9/16
The next five weeks should be good.

HOOPS

  • Gaels: Saturday's 79-74 win over Ryerson got Queen's a split. Mitch Leger was huge with 30 points, 12 rebounds in a matchup with a top post player, Ryerson's Boris Baković. There's still some hope Queen's can get into third place in the OUA East, but they'll need help.
Gee-Gees: The U of O men are going to have a very tough game next Saturday vs. Toronto, which might ultimately decide second place in the OUA East and home court for the semi-final. From afar, coach Mike Katz's Blues look damn tough for the Gee-Gees to beat on the road.

Ottawa lost by two there last year, although they had nine missed free throws that night. For what it's worth, Dax Dessureault had a solid game at the U of T last season (14 points, six rebounds) and he's improvedly markedly since.

Easy prediction is the Ottawa women's team will get their first conference win next weekend vs. Ryerson. Emilie Morasse scored 16 points in Saturday's 63-61 loss to Laurentian.
  • Ravens: If you see the world through scarlet-coloured glasses, it's good news Carleton was sluggish vs. a young York team on Saturday. Next Friday's visit to U of T is a tailor-made opportunity to get some of the snarl back.

The pride of Odessa, Aaron Doornekamp, had an 18-point, 12-rebound night in the 80-61 win vs. York, by the way.

(We await Tyler King to swoop in and correct the factual mistakes and poorly formed arguments.)

Was at the Gaels' basketball games this weekend, and both of the men's ones could have gone either way. They were hanging in there with Toronto for most of the night Friday, but proved unable to adapt when the Blues switched to a zone defence. The Toronto-Ottawa game next week should be pretty good: the Blues certainly seem to be a solid team. On Saturday, Queen's dominated Ryerson for most of the game, but a zone again caused problems late, and the Rams were back within two until Leger hit a 3 with 15 seconds left. Definitely closer than I would have liked to see. Next weekend's road trip to York and Laurentian should be interesting: the Gaels definitely need to win both to keep any hopes of third place alive.

No factual mistakes whatsoever, Neate, a splendidly done job.

One fun little note, though - in the Laurier game it's pretty well the consensus of the Queen's side from what I heard that the final should've been 3-0. The argument is that Laurier's goal should've been waved off because there was a man in the crease - Queen's had had a goal called off the previous night against Waterloo for the exact same reason, by the exact same ref. Would've been nice and apropos to see Gibb get a 40-shot shutout, but either way that's a massive upset that makes taking the division much easier, esp. if they sweep Windsor next weekend.
