THE CANDY MAN CAN

If you're picking up a Globe & Mail tomorrow, be sure to read Steve Brunt's tribute to the late, great John Candy, who' ll be honoured at the CFL awards dinner in Toronto tonight.

The best part about hearing about John Candy now is that it's a spur to start scouring IMDb for the best quotes from his movie. The Del Griffith speech from Planes, Trains & Automobiles just hits home more with each passing year, especially if you've never been overly lovable in losing, the way Candy's characters always were:
"You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get."

Words to live by, except for the wife part.
