Don't know what the story is, I have to guess he wants / needs money.
The trend of former jocks selling off their memorabilia is growing however. I do think it is telling, the jocks don't care about the flotsam of stuff they collect while playing but pitiful, jock worshipping fans salivate over this stuff. Add it to their basement shrines or whatever.
This happens every once in a while, and it isn't always a hard luck tale of woe. A lot of these guys just don't care about the ring all that much - it just sits in a box at home, never gets worn, and so they decide to get rid of it. I have a provincial championship ring from football, and although I would never sell it, (no one would buy it anyway!) I can't remember the last time I wore it.
Having said all that, good luck getting the $3,500 for it that they are estimating.
Update -- according to the Lionbackers.com message board, this isn't the first time that someone has tried to sell this ring. Apparently it was also up for sale a couple of years ago, with no takers. TSN has tried to reach Johnson, with no success. That would appear to validate the fear that this ring is being sold because Johnson has financial problems, but again, you never know.

Instead of getting an autograph, GET A LIFE!
