HOMETOWN BREAKDOWN: STEWART A PANTER, NOT A PANTHER?

• Former Fronts captain Anthony Stewart, in the considered view of Palm Beach Post hockey scribe Brian Biggane (this guy is good), did himself a big favour by scoring in the Florida Panthers' pre-season win over the Blackhawks today.

Biggane wrote a few days ago that Panthers coach Jacques Martin "was disappointed with (Stewart's) fitness level" and might be in tough to start the season with the big club (insofar as the Florida Panthers count as "the big club.")

Just to feed two birds with one scone, Kanata's own Cory Murphy had three assists today as the Panthers' power-play quarterback.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has more on Murphy... link via the new hockey blog illegal curve, a new blog started by, in their own words, "a bunch of Winnipeggers who love the NHL, Winnipeg Jets, and hate Gary Bettman."

Sportsnet.ca has the Fronts as the OHL's Cold Team and goalie Jason Guy as the league's Cold Player. Does this mean a special on sno-cones at Friday's home game vs. the Mississauga-St. Michael's Majors?

• Again, we're mostly interested in training camp comings and goings only so far as it concerns players we've come to follow in our travels (Kingston, Portage la Prairie, Simcoe, Ottawa). In that light, Mirtle has post noting that the Red Wings have released Simcoe native Jassen Cullimore. The big, stay-at-home defenceman was minus-30 across the past two seasons with the Blackhawks and Canadiens and he is going to be 35 years old before Christmas, but teams always need a No. 6 or 7 d-man.

Unfortunately for Cullimore, when you're bought out by the Blackhawks, you may no longer qualify as a No. 6 or 7.

I defer to your hockey acumen, James... gut feeling was that some team will be dinged up enough to take on Cullimore as an insurance policy.
