LYNX: DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS

Okay, more precisely, death by sixteen cuts. The Syracuse hitters wouldn't be denied today and the Lynx fell 7-3 (boxscore, play-by-play). That score is actually a little flattering; the offence just couldn't get going against Jeremy Cummings (5-6, 3.53 ERA) who went 5 2/3 and gave up 2 hits while striking out 6. John Ennis (4-3, 3.46 ERA) lasted 5 innings, giving up 2 runs, including a solo shot to Ryan Roberts in the third.

Bright spots for the Lynx included two sparkling defensive plays - Pedro Swann to Danny Sandoval to Dusty Wathan, taking out Kevin Barker at home on a Chad Mottola double, and a fine diving grab by recent call-up, Matt Padgett. Chris Roberson's replacement, Javon Moran, continues to impress with his speed and his bat. Javon went 2-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Tomorrow's scheduled starter for Syracuse is Mark Redman (0-0, 2.08 ERA). Every once in a while, our memory serves correct - it's the same Redman who recorded 14 wins for the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins. Redman was picked up by Toronto from Atlanta on July 31 and signed to a minor league contract. Fabio Castro (4-4, 3.13 ERA) gets the ball for Ottawa.

Weather update for A.J. Burnett's start: Environment Canada calls for 27C with showers. The Weather Network forecasts sunny skies and 26C with a 20% chance of rain. Still no prediction from Lynx groundskeeper (and amateur meteorologist) Josh Teuscher.

I'm surprised Redman is relegated to the minor leagues.
