Jesus Merchan swung the bat well in his first weekend with the Lynx, but his D, ah, not so much. He threw a double-play relay past first base in the 12th inning today for his second error of the game, allowing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre leadoff man Justin Christian to score the deciding run in a 6-5 victory (boxscore, play-by-play). That's two days in a row a throwing error contributed to the winning run in an extra inning.
Talk about a killer. Christian, who only seems to bat about .700 vs. the Lynx (35-52), got the double off Kane Davis which started the ScranYanks' game-tying three-run rally in the eighth. Shelley Duncan cleared the bases with a two-out hit that was actually scored as a single. Up till then, it was gravy for the Lynx: Charlie Weatherby III gave up only one earned run across six, Merchan was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a homer and Jason Jaramillo and Randy Ruiz homered.
Meantime, for someone who wasn't at the park, it's a concern that Jaramillo, who's slated to play in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game in Albuquerque, N.M., came out after the seventh inning. Who knows why he came out — did he have a flight to catch or something? — but the ScranYanks promptly rallied in their next at-bat to force extras.
The Lynx are back home Thursday to face the Norfolk Tides.
