Lefty reliever Mike Zagurski marked his Lynx debut by getting all four of his outs on strikeouts in last night's streak-snapping 5-2 win (boxscore, play-by-play) in Norfolk (the Southern city, not the Southern Ontario county). Combined with J.A. Happ's five-hit, six-strikeout outing over six innings, that made it a good night for Ottawa left-handers.
The skies opened up in the seventh inning and caused a one-hour, 39-minute rain delay. When play resumed, Happ (3-5), who'd only thrown 93 pitches, did not. Zagurski and Brian Sanches (12th save) nailed it down, while Chris Roberson, who was a home run shy of the cycle, factored three of the Lynx' four scoring innings.
(On the downside, the former 2-hole hitter, Joe Thurston, has been designated for assignment by the Phillies before he could even get in a game with the major-league club. That's the business ... it also means the Lynx have changed the new centre-fielder, left-fielder, second baseman and shortstop in the course of a single road trip. Thurston and Danny Sandoval could be re-signed if they each clear waivers.)
Zagurski should get a lot of work in over the next couple weeks. The Phillies recalled righty reliever Geoff Geary and meantime, is Fabio Castro being used as a starter? One more Lynx note: Utility player Joey Hammond collected his 1,000th career minor-league hit with Double-A Reading yesterday.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
