Couple local samplers too small to get their own posts, but attention should be paid:
- One of the CanWest TV stations in Vancouver often runs promos ("house ads") for the W-League team there, the Whitecaps. Do any of the Ottawa stations do that for the Fury? iF they are, I'll shut up.
From the sounds of it, the Fury were hardly outdone by the FIFA teams playing at Frank Clair when it came to putting on an exciting match this weekend. The unbeaten club absorbed their first tie of the W-League season, 3-3 vs. Toronto. German international Anna Laue set up the first two Fury goals and scored the third, but Ottawa couldn't hang on after their starting 'keeper had to retire at halftime. (From the game, not permanently... there's the hazard when you Brit up your soccer-speak.) - Nepean swimmer Matt Hawes is getting some medal hype for the Pan-Am Games, which begin next Friday in Sao Paulo, Brazil. One capital athlete has already reached the podium down there: Danelle Woods won the women's 3,000 m steeplechase in a personal-best 10:13.98 on Saturday at the Pan-Am junior track and field meet. The 18-year-old Woods is headed for the University of Illinois (brother Mike runs for another Big 10 school, Michigan).
- Canada is assured its best-ever finish at the FIBA U-21 women's world championship. Ottawa's Kadie Riverin had 10 points and a team-high three assists in the 74-69 decision over Brazil that put the Canuck cagers into today's fifth-place game vs. the Belgians. Hey, fifth in the world isn't so bad.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
