- Port Dover, Ont.'s own John Axford blew 'em away in a New York-Penn League game last night on Coney Island -- eight strikeouts, just one walk over four hitless innings in a mop-up relief stint.
- Hey, it's not like there's any relevant records for this held by former Baltimore Orioles shortstops -- oh, wait: Oriole Post is upset at ex-Lynx manager Dave Trembley, Baltimore's interim skipper, for playing Miguel Tejada one inning yesterday to extend his consecutive-game streak. (Via Deadspin.)
- Kingston note: St. Lawrence College made a big splash yesterday by introducing Andrea Blackwell, the former star with the Canadian national team, as their new women's basketball coach. It's really brutal that this left Tom Turnbull in the same position yours truly once played for him at Ernestown -- left out.
Joking aside, it's understandable why St. Lawrence wanted Blackwell. The goal should be to promote qualified women as the coaches of women's teams in the CCAA and CIS and she's got the chops. Having known Turnbull a bit, this must be a burn: He's a basketball coach through and through and he had a program going at St. Lawrence, where the team came within two points of winning a provincial medal last season. Hang in there, T. - cishoops.ca reports that returning Carleton Ravens stalwarts Ryan Bell and Aaron Doornekamp, along new graduate Oz Jeanty, showed well at the national team tryouts in Oshawa. Doornekamp, in Mark Wacyk's words, "added about 10 lbs. of muscle after the end of the CIS season and this added physical maturity has allowed him to further diversify his offensive game, especially in the low post with his back to the basket." With the double load of the Pan-Ams in July and the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifier in Las Vegas in late August, they'll probably carry a large roster.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
