It's regrettable to hear Ottawa native Yves Bériault has left the Montréal Alouettes training camp. The receiver-return specialist was generally considered the fastest man in CIS football last season while playing with the Montréal Carabins.
The reality that the CFL's larger rosters, which have taken a lot of pizzazz out of punt returns, works against someone making a team just for his return skills. The scuttlebutt at cisfootball.org is that the Als wanted Bériault, 6 feet and 185 lbs., to convert from wideout to slotback, which might not have sat well with a guy who's probably got a self-image as a deep threat.
Bériault played four years at the U de M, so conceivably he could play a fifth year, possibly with another school if he decides to begin another degree. It might be too late to do that this year, though.
