Baseball is a funny game: Jason Jaramillo came to the Lynx with a rep as a defensive catcher. With a 3-for-4 effort in tonight's 8-2 loss (boxscore, play-by-play) in the series finale vs. Pawtucket, he's hitting .351/.425/.595 over the past 11 games with three homers and nine RBI and is starting to put up some decent numbers. The pitching staff, though, is a hurtin' unit (last in WHIP, second-last in ERA), and has been giving up a lot of stolen bases (Paw Sox leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury had two tonight). That has to be vexing for the young catcher.
Noteworthy stat on Jaramillo, who's a switch-hitter: Left-handed, he's put up a decent 759 OPS, very good for a catcher in his first year of Triple-A, especially considering that the IL is a pitcher's league and Lynx Stadium suppresses run scoring. From the right side, it's been a trial (448 OPS). One wonders if he'll end up being a true lefty, either by choice or organizational edict.
One other positive from tonight's game, which saw Zack Segovia fall to 1-8, was that Anderson Garcia struck out the side during a mop-up appearance in the ninth.
