Lynx starter Bubba Nelson gets the green hardhat for being an innings-eater and smacking a double in the three-run fourth inning that turned the tide in tonight's rousing 5-4 Lynx win over Richmond (boxscore, play-by-play) over Richmond.
Nelson (seven strikeouts, just three hits allowed) saved the bullpen, which is good for the starting-starved Lynx (25-27). Kane Davis (1-1, 2.33. 1.45 WHIP), a fine middle reliever, is slated to make his first professional start since he was with the Cleveland Indians today. Anything he can give them beyond three innings is probably a bonus. The baby Braves send out lefty Dan Smith (5-2, 2.22, 1.18 WHIP at two levels) for the 1:05 start (which is on Rogers 22).
That's not meant to pour cold water on a walk-off win, capped by Joe Thurston's sayonara shot off the Braves' Rich Scalamandre (0-3) in the bottom of the ninth. It's just hard to sustain momentum without deep starting pitching. Ask the New York Yankees.
Seeing Thurston going yard for the Lynx' fourth homer in the past three games begs the question of which regular is next in line to pop his first dinger of 2007. The smart money is on Gary Burnham, who's hitting well and is too good to remain homerless for much longer.
