WELL, REALLY, HIS PRODUCER IS THE PROBLEM...
Erin Nicks of The Universal Cynic pretty much has Pierre McGuire's patter down to a T.

Did he really pick Pittsburgh over the Sens? Good God, that man crush he has on Crosby truly has altered his judgement.
Sometimes I wonder if Pierre's schtick is real, or if he is just having us all on. Surely he can't be that insufferable in person. I get the biggest kick out of his name-dropping segment on the TEAM when he is on some mornings -- one of these days I'll do a count, and see how many times he tells us that he spent time with this guy, coached this guy, had dinner with this guy, etc. His pathological need to keep proving his bonafides is both maddening and funny at the same time. Still, if you strip away all of his incredibly annoying personal ticks, the guy can actually be a decent analyst sometimes.
McGuire did indeed select Pittsburgh. He was asked by Michael Landsberg to give his selection during an upfront segment of OTR, and Pierre took the Penguins.
Can you imagine him covering games in the '80s when scores such as as 10-7 and 11-6 were commonplace? His head would have exploded at all the players "abdicating their defensive responsiblities."
Yeah, but just think of all the times he could have called a guy a "monster" for scoring a hat trick. :-)
He could have talked about "drive", and "passion" all night long, along with "puck poise", "big body presence", and of course, the oh so fresh and original, "real deal".
Okay...thanks...I'm about ready to get sick now. The only thing worse is listening to Healy talk about the game, exactly like he played - horrible. You'd think being a backup all those years, he would have absorbed some knowledge.
