The Cincinnati Reds' future came as advertised in Ottawa tonight: Canada's own Joey Votto (pictured) reached base his first three times up and put his team ahead in the sixth with an opposite-field home run, something you rarely see at pitcher-friendly Lynx Stadium. Homer Bailey, the Bats' high-end pitching prospect, threw six strong innings to pace his team to a 4-2 win (box, play-by-play), dropping the Lynx to 2-3 on their homestand.
Positives for the Lynx: Righty Zach Segovia went seven innings for the third straight start, which is good to se for for a Triple-A rookie. Manager John Russell is showing faith in his starting pitchers, which is a welcome change from the La Russaified major leagues. With two out in the seventh and a runner on third base (ex-Blue Jay Dewayne Wise) representing a three-run lead, he let the right-handed Segovia pitch to the lefty-swinging Votto, who had homered the previous time through the order and had yet to be retired on the night. Segovia got him on a fly to centre-field.
Now the big baseball-related news: The Lynx officially confirmed there will be a big rock concert at the Stadium on July 5, verifying hat Ann Marie McQueen first reported in the Sun this week.
Puddle of Mudd and Daughtry will play. The closing act is some band called Nickelback. Good for them.
This is no doubt welcome news to the capital's concertgoers and good cross-promotion for the Lynx -- it might remind some people there is a baseball team in the capital. We would say it's good news for music lovers to, but that would get us thrown out of PCAN -- the People's Coalition Against Nickelback.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
