CIS CORNER: GEE-GEES RECEIVER DRAFTED BY B.C.

U of O Gee-Gees receiver Adam Nicolson, who went in the first round to the Grey Cup champion B.C. Lions, is the only player of local interest who's been taken so far in the CFL draft.

Nicolson, at 6-foot-4 and 219 lbs., is exactly what CFL teams tend to look for in a Canadian receiver -- a big, fairly fast guy who can catch passes in tight spots and contribute on special teams. The Lions dropped Ryan Thelwell after last season, so their only legit Canadian wide receiver is Paris Jackson. Nicolson's also big enough for slotback. The Lions have Jason Clermont as their Canadian there, but Nicolson is good insurance if versatile veteran Bret Anderson, who's 34, decides to make a career change. (That's the reality in the CFL.)

UPDATE: Anyway, the draft is almost done now:

• Golden Gael-turned-potential- U of O Gee-Gee Ian Hazlett, a linebacker, was also snapped up by the Stampeders in the fifth round. The Stampeders have a thing for Queen's players — they took linebacker-long snapper Marc Mitchell a few years ago.
• B.C. also took a Gee-Gee, O-lineman with Kyle Kirkwood, 40th overall.
• Gaels receiver/blogger Brad Smith was taken in the final round by the Argos, whom like Calgary, seem to like Queen's players. (Smith's former teammate Bryan Crawford is there, although former Gaels O-lineman Jon Landon was dealt to Edmonton over the off-season.)

Say this for the CFL: The draft started at 1 p.m. Eastern, and they were almost halfway done after 90 minutes. The NFL, meantime, would be on the sixth pick of the first round. Score one for understatement.
