Adrian Peterson (pictured), whom my Minnesota Vikings just took No. 7 in the NFL draft, does come with some risk. He had a collarbone injury he had last season at Oklahoma, plus at 6-foot-2, he presents a big target for defenders, kind of like Eddie George when he came out of Ohio State in 1996. Those kinds of running backs can wear out in a hurry, which is why it can seem imprudent to take one with the first selection unless it's an edge runner/receiving threat such as Reggie Bush or Marshall Faulk who comes along once a decade.
Other than those big ifs and the usual questions about the adjustment to bigger, faster defenders at the NFL, Peterson is not a terrible pick. Gaines Adams and LaRon Landry, two defenders the Vikes eyed, were already gone. Apparently it's still too soon to take a player who has the same name as a member of the 1998 Atlanta Falcons, so Jamaal Anderson was out and Peterson was in.
The response at Access Vikings has generally been disbelief of the good kind that Peterson lasted to the No. 7 pick. Daily Norseman also said it best:
"And the best part about this pick? It's not Brady Quinn."
Quinn, meantime, has slid out of the top 12 picks entirely and was ushered to a private suite that's off-limits to the media. Yes, he's literally fled to an undisclosed location. Maybe the Vikings can get him in the second round, although receiving help is more likely.
