Wonder if Lynx skipper John Russell would have managed differently today's game vs. Indianapolis, which turned into a 10-0 laugher (box, play-by-play), had been played Aug. 28 instead of April 28.
Lefty J.A. Happ was labouring, trailing 1-0 through five innings but at 90-plus pitches (he'd struck out eight, meaning he was going deep into the count with a lot of batters). In a major-league playoff race, maybe he comes out of the game. At this point in the season, though, helping the pitcher develop stamina and work through tight spots overrides winning, and the Lynx bullpen had just worked 5 2/3 scoreless to pick up Rick Bauer in Friday's win. So Happ went back out and Indy's Rahai Davis (4-for-4, two runs, two RBI, triple, two steals) tagged his first pitch for a homer. After an error, hit and a sac bunt, Happ was lifted, and Clay Condrey failed to stanch the bleeding, giving up a two-run double to his first batter. The game just got out of hand over that, with the Lynx mustering just three hits against Indy's Marty McLeary and a pair of relievers.
A pair of left-handers throw tomorrow — the Lynx's Matt Childers vs. Indy's Sean Burnett.
