"NEXT NEXT ONE" COULD BREAK 99'S RECORD IN CAPITAL

John Tavares could set a record at the Ottawa 67's expense on Friday -- and help his Oshawa Generals clinch home ice for a potential first-round series against the Kingston Frontenacs.

Tavares needs to score twice in his team's last three games to break Wayne Gretzky's league record for most goals by a 16-year-old, while the Generals need just two points to clinch home ice. The Next Next One had just one assist last night in Oshawa's 5-0 win over last-place St. Michael's, who's just playing out the string. St. Mike's rookie goalie, Nepean's Chris Carrozzi, made 42 saves to keep it from being a complete wipeout. It always seems like Tavares never has crazy three- and four-goal nights against the league's lesser lights, which makes his stats all the more impressive.

The 67's were thunked 6-1 in Belleville, which means Brian Kilrea's boys can finish no higher than seventh, which they'll clinch with one more win or Brampton Battalion loss. As for the Fronts, Friday's home finale vs. Sudbury decides who plays Oshawa and who meets Mississauga.

Have you ever seen a more lethargic, less competitive looking version of the 67s than this one? Yikes. Not only have they not improved over the season, they are actually regressing. Back to the drawing board for Killer and Jeff Hunt this summer, because it's pretty clear their talent base isn't nearly as good as they thought it was.

This is definitely not the team who owned the season series against the Frontenacs. It's really hard to see the 67's going past five or six games vs. Belleville; they don't seem to have enough consistency in goal to pull the upset.
