AREA PLAYERS WIN GOLD AT CANADA GAMES

The best hockey on the tube last night might have been the hockey final from the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse -- Ontario beat Manitoba 6-4 to win the gold medal in a game that was a better antidote to sleep than that Senators-Thrashers snorefest.

Nepean's Chris Carrozzi, who plays goal for the OHL's Toronto-St. Michael's Majors, came on halfway through the game to replace starter Edward Pasquale and stopped all 14 shots he faced to thwart a Manitoba comeback. The Kingston Frontenacs centre Nathan Moon scored a goal, while Ottawa 67's regulars Cody Lindsay and Tyler Cuma also played their parts well.

Winning silver was the best finish Manitoba has ever had in hockey at the CWG. Between the world junior success of Jonathan Toews and a host of other up-and-coming players, the land of the Bison is challenging the long-held notion that it's the poor country cousin to the other Western provinces in hockey.

The women's hockey competition is part of Week 2 of the CWG; Team Ontario includes defencemen Sami Evelyn of Nepean (also listed as Samm on some other sites) and Laura Martindale of Kingston, who play regularly with the Ottawa Jr. Raiders in the provincial women's league (who by the way, had a pretty good regular season -- third out of 17 teams).

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
