FATE BE A FRONTENAC, INDEED

Gotta laugh like hell -- ever since that Fate Be A Frontenac exercise in snark, the Limestone City's Light Brigade almost seems to be dreaming up ways to lose crucial games.

Last night, the Kingston Frontenacs spotted the Barrie Colts four goals in the first 6 1/2 minutes. For the next couple hours they teased the local faithful with hints at a comeback, only to to give up the clinching tally in an 8-6 loss less than 90 seconds after rookie Nathan Moon scored to pull them within a goal of tying the game in the final five minutes. Suffice to say, shame on anyone who doubted they could top going one-for-11 in a shootout vs. Brampton the night before.

The Fronts are finding their own level. Fourth place in the conference is virtually out of reach. Oshawa's only one point ahead, but has games in hand. Fifth hasn't slipped away due to Sudbury Wolves' similar stagger toward the finish line, but Sudbury also has a game in hand. Does that means the Fronts could be ticketed after all for that first-round matchup with Mississauga, which would give co-blogger Neil Acharya additional chances to polish up his broadcasting chops? Actually, their mini-slide has given the Ottawa 67's (five points back with five games left to Kingston's three) a chance to take sixth place and sentence the Fronts to a first-round matchup with the Belleville Bulls. Lovely.

67's 4 Petes 1: Petes goalie Trevor Cann, who must be close to cracking up after facing 40-some shots a night all season, misplayed an early shoot-in, giving Ottawa a gift goal 3:47 in, and that was pretty much all she wrote; the Petes had trouble getting across centre ice at times. Logan Couture had a hand in the first three Ottawa goals and although it was just 3-1 after two, Cann got the mercy pull after facing 38 shots. Starting the third, Matthieu Methot promptly greeted Peterborough's other goalie Jason Missiaen with a top-shelf laser to ice the win. Missiaen, by the way, is 6-foot-7 -- would that make him the tallest goalie in hockey?

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
