MALOOF BROTHERS MULL HOCKEY MOGULDOM

Just saw this as a passing reference in an Adrian Wojnarowski column about the Joe and Gavin Maloof (pictured, with an unidentified African-American male), the owners of the Sacramento Kings, as the NBA prepares to holds its all-star game in Las Vegas:

"When it was suggested that it would seem odd for anyone but the Maloofs to own an eventual NBA team in Vegas, Gavin said: 'We'd like to own a team here, but not basketball. Maybe baseball or hockey. We'd love to own a team, but just not basketball.' " (Emphasis mine)
You know the Maloof boys -- they're the self-made millionaire sons of a millionaire. This isn't much to go on, but you have to wonder if they've talked to the NHL or not. Hockey fans could care less either way, but the way the NHL is going in the States it could be desperate enough in a few years that it might consider crossing the final frontier. Remember, the gambling issue that has scared away the NBA and NFL wouldn't be such a big deal for hockey. The Vegas sports books probably handle a lot less action on the NHL -- hockey doesn't offer a point spread, so there's less percentage for gamblers -- and most of the betting on hockey is probably done by Canadians through government-run lotteries.

(UPDATE: Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman also mentioned the NHL yesterday.)

By the way, how about the attendance in Jersey last night? The Canadiens-Devils game drew 7,515 fans. And you wonder why Lou Lamoriello wants to turn the NHL into a bus league to save costs?

NHL Scoreboard

Today's better games: Leafs-Flyers, 7; Sabres-Oilers, 7; Rangers-Hurricanes, 7

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
