Quick note on our university basketball teams of interest hailing from the 613:
- Without anyone scoring more than 13 points or pulling down more than six boards -- talk about balance -- the Queen's Golden Gaels dropped Ryerson 71-54 and are now 8-3 in the OUA East, alone in third place. Guard Cameron Eby had a team-high 13 points. Tonight's a big one for coach Rob Smart's Gaels (8-3) as they play the U of T Blues (5-6), who damn near beat Carleton and Ottawa up here last weekend. Not to jinx anything, but Queen's is flirting with a top-10 ranking for the first time in the program's history.
The women's hoops Gaels beat Ryerson 73-58, which was more or less expected. Gaels post Anne Murphy had an efficient night -- 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting. - Aaron Doornekamp had 29 points and Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie had 20 points and nine rebounds in No. 1 Carleton's 85-69 rout of York.
- The No. 5 U of O Gee-Gees stayed one game behind Carleton with a 73-68 win over Laurentian in Sudbury -- former Ernestown Secondary School standout Donnie Gibson hooped 11 points to complement Josh Gibson-Bascombe's 17-point, 13-rebound night.
Oh, and accolades to Lakehead for rallying in the second half for its first win against CIS competition all season, 67-66 over McMaster.
Again, can't stress this enough, CIS basketball fans owe it to themselves to visit Mark Wacyk's CIS Hoops Blog, which does a much better job of covering this than I possibly can. Oh, and a happy 29th birthday to good friend Greg Hughes.
