HOCKEY LEFTOVERS...

Is my face red: I know that there's a national under-22 women's hockey team, but failed to realize their game had its equivalent to the world juniors this week. James Mirtle did, and wrote about it for today's Globe & Mail.

Ashley Riggs, who plays college hockey with the Niagara Purple Eagles, scored twice in a 6-1 win over Germany in the final. File that name away for future national teams.

Second junior hockey note: The rebuilding Peterborough Petes just traded
world junior hero Steve Downie to the Kitchener Rangers. With Petes GM Jeff Twohey dealing away what's left of last year's OHL champs, that may be one less team for the Kingston Frontenacs to lose sleep over as they jockey for playoff position in the Eastern Conference. The Petes are one point behind the seventh-place Fronts.
