HOCKEY COMMUNITY PAYS TRIBUTE TO KINGSTON PLAYER

No words or deeds can bring Laura Hurd back or ease the pain of her dying far, far too young, but this is a fitting tribute: The American Hockey Coaches has renamed the NCAA Division 3 women's player of the year award after her.

Laura, who was just 24 when she died in a car crash last June 24, was a friend and minor hockey teammate of my sister, Trina Sager, for several winters in Kingston. In U.S. College Hockey Online's words, she was "arguably the greatest player to ever play Division III hockey," making all-American in all four of her seasons at Elmira College in New York state. More importantly, by all accounts she had the kind of winning personality that goes a long way toward helping a team win. No one ever had an unkind word to say about her.

I didn't know Laura personally, but it was upsetting to see Trina and our mom, who served as a trainer for several of those Kingston Kodiaks teams, lose a friend. So to learn that Laura Hurd's name is going on a trophy makes my day.
