OTTAWA'S CFL HOPES OFFICIALLY S.O.L.?

The Ottawa Sun's Don Brennan is reporting that the group of U.S.-based investors led by Bill Palmer (AKA Jesse's Dad) has "withdrawn its interest" in pursuing a third Canadian Football League team for Ottawa-Gatineau.

Easy joke: Jesse Palmer is doing so well in the TV booth as an analyst for Fox -- Bill Simmons wrote it, so it must be true, right? -- that his dad figures he doesn't need to pull any strings to extend his son's playing career.

That leaves, in his own mind at least, beer baron Frank D'Angelo as the white knight for the CFL in the capital. Oh, great.

Without taking a scientific survey, are there really more than 1,000 people in this city who are waking up today believing the CFL will ever return? If the Bill Palmer-led group is out, and the gut feelings about D'Angelo turn out to be correct (not saying that they are), then so much for optimism.

One follow-up: What does new mayor Larry O'Brien think about this now that municipally operated Frank Clair Stadium may be without a major tenant for several years to come? Granted, city politicians in Canada scarcely notice when sports teams die, since they don't seem to think it matters as much as passing obscure bylaws.

Back with more later. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
