Not that we needed another reason in our ever-evolving argument over why the CFL is cooler than the NFL in certain ways, but here's another one: It's an annual tradition at Grey Cup week to ask the coaches, at a press conference, for their views on the players engaging in pre-game sex.
The late, great Toronto Sun columnist Jim Hunt -- whom the word "irrepressible" was often applied -- started it back in and the live and let live 1970s and it's continued to this day. It's the CFL. No one takes it too seriously, eh.
Try that at a press conference organized by the super-serious, uber-corporate NFL and you'd probably wake up three days later in a field with no idea how you got there, or why you no longer had any personal identification. The No Fun League allows for some levity, but only it's league-mandated and run past a focus group first.
For the record, Montreal Alouettes coach Jim Popp wants his players to abstain from sex.
OTHER BUSINESS
- You know this space's feelings toward dudes such as Randy Moss and Ricky Williams: There's a kinship here between confused 29-year-olds, even the ones who earn millions.
Anyway, WBRS Sports Blog is having some fun with the fact there's a new college football award named after Moss: The Randy Moss Return Award, to be given to the top kick returner in the NCAA.
By unofficial count, that makes it 18 awards for the "outstanding whatever" -- defensive end, tight end, special teams player, quarterback, senior quarterback, you name it -- in U.S. college football. You know college football in the States: Keeping it simple and low-key is never an option. - With all the fuss over Leafs defenceman Pavel Kubina becoming a new dad, Neil Acharya notes that Dean would be a good name if Mats Sundin becomes a dad. As in: Mats' son, Dean.
- More proof how far the Ottawa Senators have fallen. Martin Biron, not Ryan Miller, is starting for the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Time was, you wouldn't see a top team start their backup against the Sens.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
