HOCKEY LAST NIGHT: WELL, THIS IS SOMEWHAT BIGGER THAN VANCOUVER LOSING 6-0

A feature film is in the works starring actor Tom Cavanaugh as a gay ex-Leaf -- and the league and the Toronto Maple Leafs have given their full co-operation to the project. The Toronto Star notes that not only will the Leaf logo and uniform be depicted in Breakfast With Scot, but some scenes will even be filmed during an upcoming team practice.

What is MLSE's motivation? As it is with everything else, it's all about money. They're doing the right thing, but they're thinking more about not wanting to put off the general public, including fans who happen to be gay.

It's a first, but it's really surprising -- this is 2006, after all. Still, even five years ago it would be hard to imagine any NHL team lending help to a movie that had gay themes. (The NFL refused to let video football from old games appear in Brokeback Mountain, although the justification was that they didn't want to give the impression they were comfortable with a character in the movie displaying homophobia.)

Anyway, this is a far cry from an openly gay NHL player (current or format), but it makes you wonder how far off it is. It will probably have to wait until after Don Cherry's dead, though.

(Small world: Tom Cavanaugh's not only from Ottawa, but he's an ex-Queen's Golden Gaels basketball player.)

Predators 6 Canucks 0: Vancouver backup goalie Dany Sabourin (pictured) used to play for the AHL team in Scranton, Pa., the setting of the NBC version of The Office, and his Thursday night offered more of a farce than a typical day at Dunder Mifflin. Not only did he get the mercy pull after the Preds went up by five goals against a completely flat Vancouver team, but Pam isn't responding to his text-messages.

Nashville got the easy win, but had to take goalie Tomas Vokoun out after the second period after he was struck on the hand by a shot. Chris Mason might be starting the next few games.

HOMETOWN BREAKDOWN

Just a quick note that Kingston Frontenacs forward Cory Emmerton had a pretty big night yesterday for Team OHL in a 5-0 win over the Russian selects. Those games carry some weight in the Team Canada selections for the World Juniors.

The Fronts, with 11 points in their past 12 games, host Oshawa tonight. Sunday, they face in the Toronto-St. Michael's Majors. Our own Neil Acharya will be doing colour commentary for the radio broadcast back to Kingston.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.

You know, I think it would be great if a gay NHLer came out of the closet, and while Don Cherry was still sermonizing on HNIC. You know he would go off about and make some sort of comment, and that would be the last straw. He can rag on French Canadians and Europeans all he wants (seemingly), but there's no way the CBC could allow him to continue after a homophobic meltdown. Oh to dream.
