HOCKEY LAST NIGHT: SABRES STICK IT TO LEAFS, SHUTOUT FOR THE GENTLEMAN FROM VERONA

Sabres 7 Leafs 4: Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand.

It jumped up a notch.... it did, didn't it?

The Sabres spotted the Leafs two goals in the game's first four minutes. For Buffalo these days, that's not a bad position to be in, since they roared back for their league-high 18th win of the season. The final score probably still flattered the Leafs, even though the Sabres had two empty-netters. They scored twice on 5-on-3 power plays and caught a huge break when Buffalo's Mike Ryan ensured he would never, ever forget his NHL debut by putting the puck in his own net.

By the way, BfloBlog looks at what the Sabres might have to do if concussed centre Tim Connolly is cleared to play some time in the New Year and how that affects them vis-a-vis the salary cap.

Sens 3 Flyers 2 (overtime): Ottawa made it four wins in five games after Wade Redden scored in overtime, but the armchair GMs will probably find fault with goalie Ray Emery on the second Philly goal.

Canucks 4 Red Wings 3 (overtime): Question -- Vancouver's biggest win yet this year? Brendan Morrison gets the OT winner.

Stars 1 Predators 0: Stars rookie goalie Mike Smith, the pride of the Eastern Ontario village of Verona, Ontario -- right between Piccadilly and Hartington along Hwy. 38, for those of you who need a point of reference -- recorded the second shutout of his young career. Which means he already has one more than current Sportsnet analyst John Garrett had in his entire NHL career.

Canadiens 4 Wild 2: Cristobal Huet made 19 of his 36 saves in the second period, when the Wild pulled even, but might have felt they deserved to take the lead. Having got out a period where they "sucked" (in Saku Koivu's words), the Habs bounced back and won it on a Radek Bonk goal.

Wild defenceman Kurtis Foster, who's from the Ottawa Valley town of Carp, left with an injury after being struck in the head with the puck. Shout-out time: It was the NHL debut for Wild forward Benoit Pouliot, whom my friend Trevor Stewart got to see a lot of last winter while covering the OHL's Sudbury Wolves for the local paper there, The Star. (Trevor points out that Pouliot, who's from Hawkesbury -- another Eastern Ontario guy -- had quite the little adventure getting his skates and equipment to Montreal.

Flames 4 Blackhawks 1: Alex Tanguay starts a new streak of getting two assists, no more, no less, each game.

Blues 4 Blue Jackets 3 (shootout): Hello, Ken Hitchcock. (James Mirtle has this covered very well.)

Elsewhere: Bruins 4 Penguins 3 (shootout); Sharks 6 Kings 3; Islanders 4 Hurricanes 2; Coyotes 3 Devils 1; Avalanche 3 Ducks 2 (shootout); Thrashers 4 Capitals 2; Lightning 6 Panthers 4.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
