The ol' alma mater is breaking new ground among Canadian universities -- Queen's is launching iTunes U, which will let anyone download lectures and other programs to their computers and iPods. (Here's the site itself)
Good idea, especially academically. There's a lot of people who are more visual and oral listeners who learn better from lectures than from poring through scribbled notes and textbooks.
Of course, my interest as an alum is with the applications for sports events. A while back, I posted about how the on-campus radio station, CFRC 101.9 FM, might not be able to afford an Internet broadcast fee -- which would deprive yours truly of his lifeline to the Golden Gaels on fall Saturdays. Which would be a real bummer.
(Going the iTunes u route at the expense of CFRC -- which as I understand it, lost much of its funding a few years back -- somewhat reeks of stifling alternative voices, but that's another column. Who wants to hear about alternative voices when everyone's just going to download Bedouin Soundclash anyways?)
That's neither here nor there. If CFRC loses its Internet license, iTunes U might have fill the void for us diehard Tricolour fans next season.
