ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREAT GABRIEL'S CATCH

It's going to pass almost unnoticed outside Ottawa (and Saskatchewan), but tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of one of the seminal Grey Cup games — the 1976 contest where Tony Gabriel snagged a last-second TD pass to give the Ottawa Rough Riders a 23-20 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

To an older generation, it's the greatest Grey Cup ever. Ottawa doesn't even have a team anymore to publicize. it. I wasn't around for it -- I was born five weeks later -- but it's always been a retro-vintage game for me: the Eastern Riders vs. the Western Riders, 50,000 people watching outdoors at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, and a tight end making the big catch.

Sorry to keep bringing that up, Saskatchewan fans, especially with Danny Barrett getting fired today.

Not sure about going 'unnoticed' - the Citizen had a big article about the whole thing, including comments from a still bitter Ted Provost, in yesterday's edition.

Yes, of course! Thanks! Make that unnoticed outside Ottawa (and Saskatchewan).
