CARLETON COMES CLOSE TO BEATING NCAA TEAM

Sure, it's early-season exhibition and way too early to start thinking about college hoops on either side of the border, but those who don't take Canadian university basketball seriously should look again.

The Carleton Ravens came within a couple seconds of beating a NCAA D-1 team tonight, losing 67-66 to the Louisville Cardinals on a putback by Juan Palacios with 1.2 seconds left. Again, it was an exhibition game, but it's a far cry from the 30-point losses Carleton would often absorb against D-1 teams. Former Ernestown Eagle Aaron Doornekamp had 19 points, by the way. Carleton's Osvaldo Jeanty had a game-high 20, including six threes.

The Rick Pitino even said he wasn't "expecting a victory," but who knows how sincere he was.

Not too shabby, considering Carleton couldn't afford to go as deep into its bench as it normally does against Canadian opponents. All five starters played at least 27 minutes each, so not surprisingly, Louisville had a 28-2 advantage in bench scoring.

OTHER BUSINESS

  • Hey, the Jays actually won: A.J. Burnett tossed a three-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Pawtucket, excuse me, Boston Red Sox.
  • It's down to single-elimination games for Canada's women at the World Fastpitch Championship after a 1-0 loss to China early Saturday. Right-hander Robin Mackin pitched a one-hitter, but the Chinese put together a walk, a sac bunt and a single in the first inning for the only run and made it stand up. Canada has to beat Taiwan on Sunday, then win two more games Monday to get into the semifinal (or "bronze medal match," since that's what the loser goes home with.) The top four teams not including China qualify for Beijing.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
