YOU'RE WITH ME, LAUREN BAY (IN MORAL SUPPORT, STRICTLY SPEAKING)

Yours truly will be keep tabbing, and making notes as events warrant, on Canada's women's fastpitch team (softball, to the layperson) as it plays at the International Softball Federation XI Women's Fast Pitch World Championship this week in Beijing. (Man, that's a mouthful.)

The top four finishers excluding the host Chinese qualify for the 2008 Olympics. Canada moved to 2-0 today, beating Great Britain 5-1 behind a home run from Sheena Lawrick, a 3-for-4 day by Melanie Matthews and four shutout innings by lefty pitcher Lauren Bay, the sister of Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Jason Bay. Its next game is tomorrow (China time) against the powerhouse U.S. ... uh, there probably won't be much to report from that.

While we're here, congratulations to Greg Hughes on the new job that he starts next week. That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
