HOMETOWN BREAKDOWN: BROTHERS NAMED TO NATIONAL HOOPS SQUAD

It's not every day that you see two people from your neck of the woods selected to Team Canada in any sport, so tip of the cap goes to Aaron Doornekamp (top photo) and Nate Doornekamp (bottom photo), a pair of fellow Ernestown Secondary School grads who have been named to Canada's senior men's basketball team.

Canada Basketball is in a bit of rebuilding program -- it didn't qualify for this summer's worlds -- so Aaron and Nate appear to be getting in on the ground floor under the new head coach, Raptors TV analyst Leo Rautins.

Hopefully Rautins and whatever core group of players who eventually emerge can raise Canada's world basketball profile. Just like with men's soccer, there's no good reason we shouldn't be doing better in international competition.

Yes, Out of Left Field cheers for all Team Canadas, not just the ones in hockey. As noted before, it's all about being a different kind of sports nerd around here.

OTHER BUSINESS
  • Off Wing Opinion has pretty close to a complete take on the New York Islanders debacle. This just smacks of a David Stern conspiracy.
  • Great comment at Deadspin over the Seattle Supersonics' shameless shakedown of Seattle masked as a move to Oklahoma City: "Pro sports are going to become the providence (sic) of wannabe towns with inferiority complexes." He means province, but if that's the case, Winnipeg will be back in the NHL before long.

Actually, some would say we're already at that point: Ottawa does have a hockey team.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
