DINNER HOUR UPDATE

News and notes as you wished you had a receipt for that obviously defective David Ortiz voodoo doll.

• Stick a fork in the Jays? The deficit grew to 5 games after the Red Sox survived a bullpen collapse and beat the Phillies in 12 on a typical bit of clutch hitting by Big Papi. Here's why it's too early: Boston's bound to cool off, and its run differential suggests they've been getting the breaks. (Not as many as the Washington Nationals got in the first half of '05, but enough.)
• The inaugural edition of Blog Blasts Past looked at what you do when Mr. Most Likely to Succeed actually fulfills that prophesy — and does it a field related to the one you wanted to be a superstar in.
Condolences to Laura Hurd and her "hockey family."
• Are the Leafs serious about trading for Chris Pronger? It might be bad karma if they go through with this move.
• Jamie Moyer or John Smoltz joining the Jays between now and the end of July? Dare to dream, Arnold, dare to dream.

That's all for now. Stay classy.
