MAY 2-4 WEEKEND: ANOTHER SIX-PACK DOWN . . . WITH A GIANT SHRUG OF SWEET BUGGER-ALL

All together now: Barry Bonds hit No. 714, and I don't care .... Barry Bonds hit No. 714, and I don't care ...

Well, obviously I care. I haven't seen the replay, since unwinding with the new Neil Young album early this a.m. is vastly more appealing than watching sports highlights narrated by functional illiterates.

Ultimately, it's too soon to analyze the Bonds phenomenon. The best I can manage to say is that it's some sort of allegory for the emptiness of sport and spectacle in this day and age.

It doesn't inspire anything but a giant collective shrug that comes with feeling sweet bugger-all. And if Bonds can get to No. 756, the feeling will be much the same.

  • Strange coincidence: on the same afternoon yours truly was ranting away about hockey-related matters in Kingston, Ont., the Limestone City's own Jay McKee stepped out of character and scored the game-winner in the Sabres' 3-2 win over Carolina in the opener of the Eastern Conference final. It's just McKee's 20th career goal, playoff or regular season, in 10-plus seasons, but it was a big one. That's the makings of a good Tragically Hip song right there, I'm telling you.
  • Bill Simmons' latest mailbag column contains an ingenious idea: sports organizations should create a Vice President of Common Sense: "(He) doesn't attend meetings, scout prospects, watch any film or listen to any inside information or opinions; he lives the life of a common fan. They just bring him in when they're ready to make a big decision." Can you imagine if the Leafs had this? John Ferguson Jr. never would have signed Jason Allison or Eric Lindros -- he'd never have been hired in the first place.
  • Whice segues right into rehashing one of the great dumb decisions made anywhere outside of elected office in the past 12 months. Considering that Eric Staal is in the playoffs and seeing how well Sidney Crosby played throughout the World Hockey Championship, how dumb does it look now to have put Todd Bertuzzi on the Olympic roster at their expense?
Sweden's 5-4 semifinal win over Canada means I was one-quarter happy. They'll go for the double -- winning the Olympic and world tournaments in the same year -- against the Czechs today. It's Canada-Finland in the bronze game.
  • Thanks to this video of Bryan Trottier and Kevin Stevens taunting Brian Bellows in the '91 final, we know why TV producers were long reluctant to "mike up" NHL players. (Thanks to The Airing of Grievances and Deadspin for this.)
  • Rocky Mountain Low: It falls on Ted Lilly this afternoon to help the Blue Jays avoid a sweep after last night's 5-1 loss to the Rockies.

The six-pack is drained. That's all for now. Give it up for Wintersleep.
