If so, then surely the OUA Coach of the Year (supposedly) accusing the entire team of doing the same would too.Tyler Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05837449412824159700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-81294245573877266782008-02-09T18:20:00.000-05:002008-02-09T18:20:00.000-05:00Second-top story is a little much... this is reall...Second-top story is a little much... this is really such a picayune little thing ... does a guy working at the Toyota plant in Woodstock who reads the Free Press on his coffee break really need to read about this?

If they wanted to cover this, the best place to cover would it have been online, via a blog (Mo's Mumblings? Costa Living?) where it would get to a dedicated readership.

Of course, the less said about Quebecor/Sun Media's approach to blogs, the better.sagerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757652892056684490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-66377117507320545412008-02-09T18:04:00.000-05:002008-02-09T18:04:00.000-05:00I actually didn't mind Dalla Costa's piece too muc...I actually didn't mind Dalla Costa's piece too much: at least he talked to me and related my side of the story as well as Sheahan's inflammatory comments about my character, which is probably the best I could hope for here. It's sort of unfortunate that they covered this to such a high degree (it got play as their second-top sports story, below only the Leafs and above the Knights), as it was the intensity of the coverage more than anything that made this into an issue, but they've got the right to cover what they want, just as we do. Spelling Eriksson wrong is highly unfortunate, but as you pointed out so well, mistakes do happen...Andrew Bucholtzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14156615450275929751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-40571558121203287592008-02-09T15:57:00.000-05:002008-02-09T15:57:00.000-05:00They weren't sacrificing coverage of other issues ...They weren't sacrificing coverage of other issues for the sake of MDC's column, though. I really think you're exaggerating their editorial slant by implying they're 'ripping' anyone - Dalla Costa doesn't editorialize at all or put forth his opinion on the issue - he puts forth quotes from all sides involved and it seems a decently balanced account - the fact that it criticizes your old (and formerly better) publication doesn't exclude it from that category.

And heck, if someone attacked CFRC, I wouldn't immediately defend it, Neate, esp. if the criticism was warranted. Conversely, if an unwarranted criticism was levelled against the Journal, I wouldn't immediately latch onto it as fact. It's possible to be objective about these things.Tyler Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05837449412824159700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-57772403378530894122008-02-09T13:58:00.000-05:002008-02-09T13:58:00.000-05:00See, this is why T-Stew will rule the world... it'...See, this is why T-Stew will rule the world... it's not unreasonable for them to do a follow-up, but it could have been covered off with a one-paragraph passing reference in a Sat/Sun notebook column.

But again, first rule for a hometown sports columnist is tell people what they need to hear... do Free Press readers need to hear about what's in the Queen's student paper as they do about (random examples) their London Knights, or what impact the next municipal budget might have on sports families? As you say, turning this into a column is a little over-the-top and bully-pulpitish.sagerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757652892056684490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-24274177614568342552008-02-09T13:24:00.000-05:002008-02-09T13:24:00.000-05:00While I hate seeing fumbles by student-journalists...While I hate seeing fumbles by student-journalists obsessed over, Neate - God knows we all made our share in school and beyond - it's not unreasonable for the FreeP to follow up on a suggestion (student media or otherwise) that a local CIS team may have a drug issue.
Perhaps the length of MDC's story isn't completely justified, and it's not exactly balanced ... wait, who's writing for the university publication here?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-3023758816903396222008-02-09T13:23:00.000-05:002008-02-09T13:23:00.000-05:00I should point out one interpretation was that She...I should point out one interpretation was that Sheahan comes off as half-upset at the reporter, half-upset with himself, noting that he was eager to go home on a Friday when the reporter called and that he had said a couple things in jest.

Coach Sheahan is known for his sense of humour and his way with words and hopefully he won't change because of this. Move along, nothing to see here. Granted, it's a little hard to see things so clearly when someone is waving a Western flag six inches in front of your face.

Andrew's human and his editors at The Journal are human. This shall pass.

There's no need for an out-of-town daily to take them to task. If London's going to make a habit of ripping apart student journalism, they can probably find enough in their own backyard.

Besides, as any regular readers of Frank magazine readers know, the London Free Press has much bigger issues than what appears in a student paper in another city. How about they try getting their circulation back above 100,000, or getting computers made in this decade? Then they can worry about what's in out-of-town student papers.

(Is there defensiveness about The Journal since I used to right there. Damn straight there is -- and if the Freep-ers did a takedown piece on CFRC, I'd defend that too.)sagerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757652892056684490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16538424.post-20163934297108265562008-02-09T12:44:00.000-05:002008-02-09T12:44:00.000-05:00Morris Dalla Costa isn't exactly being holier-than...Morris Dalla Costa isn't exactly being holier-than-thou, Neate.
