LAST, LAST, LAST, LAST WORDS ON THE MITCHELL REPORT...

... goes to Babes Love Baseball ...

Buster in his 'kerchief, and Bud in his cap,
Had just settled down for three hours of crap.

When out in the press room, there arose such a clatter,
Oh, it's just Canseco... he doesn't really matter.

And Kissing Suzy Kolber, who imagines what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell must be imagining after his league got a free pass on steroids -- again. Remember when it came out that several key guys on Carolina's 2003 Super Bowl team were implicated as dopers? No? Exactly.

Add me to the list of people who can't figure out why the NFL is getting a free pass, while baseball continues to public don the hairshirt. Having said that, I think John and Jane Q. Public view this report with a collective shrug. You mean athletes were cheating by using performance enhancing drugs? NO WAY!!! Let's take, for instance, Lattimer, err, I mean Merriman. Dude goes 272, which is only six pounds lighter than Anthony Munoz was. He also runs a 4.6 40, just a shade over what Jerry Rice ran. Is someone trying to tell me that in 15 years, athletic training and evolution have come so far that Merriman was able to accomplish all of that WITHOUT drugs? Give me a break. Needless to say, the cynical view is that most athletes are doing it, so the shock value wore off long ago.

I used to be really keen on testing and busting athletes who took performance enhancers, but I have slowly lapsed into a more libertarian view. I think education is the key now -- these guys need to know what the long term implications might be of blood doping, HGH, etc.. From there, they can, and no doubt will, make their own decisions. I just want to ensure it is an informed one.
